Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Second set a-holic- I need a program

I admit I am a second set-aholic- Now I am talking from about 1978 forward- but there are years where I do not listen to first sets much prior to that- unless China-Rider or Here Comes Sunshine or Plain are in them.

Is there a cure for this? Can anyone point out outrageous first sets from '78 onward that do not have a plethora of cowboy songs- where the weir songs are like cassidy and Lit it Grow or lazy lightning......no Looks like rain please- or dylan songs

Are there any first sets out there with enough wonderful Jerry to make me sit through the set?

HELP

ALright I haven't done my research yet but to find a first set as narrowminded as the one your looking for may be impossible, especially in the 80's when Jer fell in love with Dylans music. And Cassidy of course was in the reportoire for sometime. And you gotta think in the 80's more songs were introduced from other writers for other band members, not as many Jerry highlights.

Dylan songs are now okay as long as they are sung by Jerry

But think- it is okay to have almost any weir songs if the first set is something like 3/9/81- my very first show- and what a kicker that was- another spectacular first set is 4/6/82 in Philly- add to that 4/1/88- so folks- take a look at those- xcan you think of any similar type sets? Shakedown set 1 openers are always grand.....I once heard a legend that any set 1 with Ramble on Rose always ends up being a good set.

It just so happens I usually prefer 1st sets to second sets. Probably because they keep me at a better pace when I jogging.

4/19/82
7/17/82 (truckin to end the first set, though they mess it up)
8/3/82 (great playing and song selection)
8/10/82 (favorite first set ever)
6/27/83 (Liam, just read your review of this one. How bout the Sugaree to close the 1st set? The Scar/Fire is awesome)
10/8/83 (favorite minglewood ever and great Stranger)
10/15/83 (let it grow)
10/21/83 (music never stopped opener)
4/14/84 (great Stranger and Let it grow)
7/21/84 (Shakedown and China/Rider mid first set)
10/14/84 (a long one)
12/31/84 (awesome Shakedown)
3/28/85 (very unique set list)
4/4/85 (she belongs to me)
4/27-28/85 (both epic first sets)
6/27/85 (crazy fingers, high time 1st set)
2/11/86 (China/Rider opener)

thanks for a most excellent list

don't forget the 06/27/85 all instrumental Supplication Jam between Crazy Fingers and High Time...Jer sets the bait for Lazy Lightening numerous times, but Ace doesn't bite

also the 10/20/84 epic Jack Straw

Jerry tried to do the same thing with Lazy Lightnin on 3/29/85 as well. Weir wouldn't have anything to do with it. Guess Wier was determined to not play this one after '84. I wonder why, but it does seem like they sort of grew out of that song. I wish they had kept playing Passenger.

I think it was 9/21/82 that had the playin>crazy fingers opener. And they did another time on that tour as well...maybe 9/15?

Kind of funny, same topic is going on right now at rec.music.gdead

Here is a link - lots more goodies here. I'm about to listen to 3/7/81.

What about the Rainbow Theatre 3/21/81. How Jerry can you get folks? People who only dig second sets are missing out on some serious gold.
